Orinoco Tobacco harvest has wrapped up! While many in our region know tobacco was a major cash crop in colonial Maryland and might see aging tobacco barns on their daily commutes, fewer understand how the sacred plant’s exploitation forever changed the Southern Maryland landscape. In "Sacred Tobacco: A Native Plant (a lecture in the Tobacco Talk series) we partnered with the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, and members of the Indigenous community shared their personal experiences with growing tobacco and the significance of tobacco in their respective cultures. The entire Tobacco Talks series is available for purchase through our website at www.accokeek.org/resources. There is no fee for members of the Indigenous community; please contact outreach@accokeek.org for a discount code.#NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #piscatawaypeople #NativeAmericanHeritage #IndigenousHeritage ...
